General information

With the 10th week of pregnancy, one of the most complex and critical stages of pregnancy development comes to an end. It is precisely during the first 8–10 weeks that negative factors such as stress, illnesses in the mother (including acute respiratory infections), as well as the use of various medications are considered especially dangerous. All of these can negatively affect the formation and development of the baby’s internal organs.

By this stage, after the first nine weeks of pregnancy have passed, the foundations of all vital organs have already been laid, and they have begun their stages of growth and maturation. By this time, the placenta has also fully formed and started functioning. From now on, the placenta is responsible for metabolic processes and for preventing harmful substances from reaching the embryo. This indicates that the most critical phase of development has passed. However, it is still too early to relax — about thirty more weeks remain ahead, and they may bring both pleasant and not-so-pleasant “surprises” for the expectant mother.

Sensations during the 10th week of pregnancy

At the 10th week of pregnancy, early toxicosis attacks may still trouble you. This unpleasant condition may even intensify somewhat, so the expectant mother needs to be patient and follow the doctor’s recommendations in order to feel better.

In addition to nausea and vomiting, heartburn may also appear. This occurs due to relaxation of the muscle separating the esophagus from the stomach, which allows stomach contents to move upward into the esophagus. Gastric acid irritates the esophageal lining, causing a burning sensation in the chest and sometimes pain. For this reason, some pregnant women may experience abdominal pain during the 10th week, usually slightly above the navel, in the stomach area, with stabbing sensations. These unpleasant symptoms may persist even until childbirth.

Along with these sensations, you may begin to visit the restroom more frequently. This is related to the growing uterus pressing on the bladder. In some cases, frequent urination may be accompanied by urinary incontinence, especially when coughing, laughing, or sneezing. This condition may occur in repeat pregnancies, at later stages, and in some cases even during this period.

What happens during the 10th week of pregnancy

At this stage, the uterus continues to grow. It now rises slightly above the pubic bone. You may notice that your pants feel tighter around the waist. If your abdomen was previously flat, you may now observe a slight rounding of the lower abdomen when looking in the mirror. However, these changes are usually not yet noticeable to others.

During this period, a pregnant woman may notice increased skin pigmentation. Hair growth may also accelerate, and fine hair may appear on the abdomen, chest, or face. There is no need to be alarmed by this — these changes are simply additional effects of hormonal shifts. After childbirth, such “imperfections” usually disappear on their own within two to four months, depending on the individual characteristics of the woman’s body.

The baby’s condition at 10 weeks

The 10th obstetric week of pregnancy corresponds to the eighth embryonic week. The baby continues to develop actively. If there are no specific medical indications, an ultrasound examination is usually not performed at this stage. However, the gynecologist may explain that the baby’s skeleton, which was previously composed of soft cartilage, is now beginning to transform into stronger bone tissue. This indicates that calcium becomes an especially important and valuable element in the pregnant woman’s body at this time.

The baby’s face

By this stage, the embryo’s facial features and lower jaw have already formed, although facial muscles are just beginning to develop. During this period, the upper lip is actively forming. The baby’s nose is still completely covered with a mucous layer and has not yet fully developed, but olfactory receptors have already appeared.

Overall development

The muscles of the oral cavity begin to form. The baby’s tongue becomes covered with taste buds. Gradually, the chewing muscles develop. The muscle systems of the neck and throat take shape.

The baby’s stomach moves into the lower part of the abdominal cavity and takes its proper position. It continues to grow and develop actively in preparation for functioning. The formation of nerve endings begins.

The baby’s heart beats at an astonishing rate — about 160–170 beats per minute. The baby continues to grow actively. By the 10th week of pregnancy, the fetus measures approximately 28–33 mm in length. More than half of the total body length is taken up by the head. The embryo’s weight is around 3–4 grams.

Recommendations

The expectant mother should take special care of herself and avoid nervous stress and excessive fatigue. During this period, it is important to rest more and conserve energy, as only a small portion of the journey has been completed so far.
