Child development

The baby can change facial expressions (e.g., frown).

Changes in the mother's body

Your belly may become slightly noticeable.

General information

The 14th week of pregnancy is considered one of the most pleasant stages of this long journey. You feel well, most people are still unaware of your special condition, and your baby is already asking for communication. The little one hears the mother’s voice, senses her mood — this is the perfect time to start talking to your baby.

Your appetite may increase, and your body will require more protein. Avoid overeating, but do not give up proper, nutritious meals.

Sensations at 14 weeks of pregnancy

The mother’s abdomen rises higher and becomes noticeably rounder. It can still be hidden under loose clothing, but if you wear tighter outfits, it becomes difficult to conceal the growing belly. At home, while lying on the couch, the uterus can be gently felt through the abdominal wall. Mothers pregnant with their second child may already sense the baby’s first movements. Even if this does not happen yet, by weeks 18–20 you will clearly feel your baby’s kicks. Light sensations of “movement” or “fluttering” may appear in the abdomen.

A woman’s weight continues to increase, but for now this is mainly due to the increased volume of circulating blood. The expectant mother is usually happy about this weight gain, but appetite still needs to be controlled — excessive weight gain will not be beneficial.

Condition of the fetus at 14 weeks of pregnancy

At this stage, the fetus grows rapidly and gains weight intensively. If it were possible to see the baby now, it would look very much like a newborn. However, the baby is still very thin, as fat tissue has not yet begun to accumulate — organ and system development is far more important at this stage.

The baby’s eyebrows and eyelashes appear, facial muscles become more developed, and expressions become more distinct. The baby starts sucking its fingers, which brings comfort. When the mother eats something sweet, the taste of the amniotic fluid changes — the baby enjoys it and swallows more of it. Sensory perception becomes more diverse: skin sensitivity increases, and taste receptors continue to develop.

The baby’s sex cannot yet be determined at 14 weeks, although the formation of the reproductive organs is nearing completion.

At 14 weeks, the fetus measures approximately 8.7 cm from the buttocks to the crown of the head and weighs about 43 grams.

Emotional state: as if worries never existed

The woman’s emotional and psychological state begins to stabilize. By this time, she has largely accepted her condition and may notice changes in her outlook on life. Emotionally, the expectant mother is ready for her new role, deeply experiencing everything connected with the baby.

Irritability and mood swings are no longer dangerous — the mother becomes calmer, more balanced, and less affected by external stressors.

The body asks for protein-rich foods

Because the baby’s muscular system is developing actively, it moves more, and the mother’s body requires increased protein intake. Boiled beef and legumes should be essential parts of the daily diet. Do not forget about connective tissues — consume plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Sweets and flour-based products should be limited and eaten in small quantities, preferably before noon. Avoid the idea of “eating for two” — excess weight at this stage is unnecessary.

It is quite possible that at 14 weeks your doctor will recommend taking a vitamin complex. Food alone does not always provide all the necessary nutrients in sufficient amounts.

Medical tests

As a rule, the first ultrasound is performed between 11 and 13 obstetric weeks. However, some women postpone it slightly. For them, the 14th week is an appropriate time to undergo an ultrasound examination. For women whose pregnancy is progressing normally, no special tests are usually required at this stage.

If necessary, the doctor may prescribe a general urine test or blood tests. If the pregnant woman reports any complaints, additional examinations may be recommended.

What happens at 14 weeks of pregnancy

Moles and papillomas may appear on the woman’s body specifically around the 14th week of pregnancy. These changes are not dangerous, but it is advisable to inform your doctor about them.

The abdomen continues to grow, and due to skin stretching, stretch marks may begin to form. This is the right time to purchase a special cream or at least apply olive oil regularly to the abdomen.

Your gait may start to change, so it is better to give up high-heeled shoes. Pregnancy is not a reason to neglect your appearance — on the contrary, your inner glow gives your face a special charm. Neatly styled hair, light makeup, and comfortable yet elegant clothing will make you look radiant and confident.
