Heartbeat accelerates. Legs are developing.

Changes in the mother's body

Some mothers may feel the baby’s first movements.

General information

The 16th week of pregnancy is a time when everything is progressing normally. The second trimester continues to please you with the disappearance of toxicosis and mood swings. The baby is growing rapidly, the belly is becoming more rounded, and the expectant mother can truly enjoy these calm and carefree days.

Women who are pregnant with their second child may already begin to feel the baby’s first movements. The expectant mother’s appetite is very good, frequent trips to the bathroom are no longer an issue — an excellent state to be in. This is the perfect time to start preventing stretch marks caused by skin stretching and to avoid excessive weight gain.

What happens at 16 weeks of pregnancy

A normally progressing pregnancy at this stage should not be accompanied by pain or severe weakness. Mild fatigue or tiredness may appear after physical activity, but pain in the lower abdomen or a general feeling of illness should not disturb the expectant mother. If you notice such symptoms, it is important to consult a doctor.

The breasts continue to increase in size, while their painful sensitivity gradually decreases. If earlier this discomfort even interfered with sleep, now these sensations usually fade away.

For some women, this period brings a long-awaited event — the baby’s first movements. At 16 weeks of pregnancy, the first fetal movements may be felt, although many women do not immediately realize that these sensations are indeed movements. The baby’s gentle pushes can feel like light fluttering, as if delicate butterflies are softly brushing their wings inside you.

Fetal condition at 16 weeks

At 16 weeks, the fetus weighs approximately 100–120 grams and measures about 11 cm from the tailbone to the crown of the head. The baby can already hold its neck upright and has learned to turn its head from side to side. The little heart is working actively, and the liver has begun to perform digestive functions. The kidneys and bladder are functioning well — the baby urinates approximately every 45 minutes.

At this stage, the doctor may explain what is happening in the baby’s circulatory system. The baby’s blood is now fully formed, and both the blood group and Rh factor can already be determined. Fetal hemoglobin is still being produced. About six months after birth, regular hemoglobin will gradually replace fetal hemoglobin.

Staying emotionally balanced

The hormonal background has stabilized, making the woman calmer and more relaxed. Many expectant mothers feel a surge of energy, their thoughts become more positive, and they feel eager to accomplish many tasks.

Concerns about the baby’s safety are largely behind you — miscarriages are rare during the second trimester. If the mother is not superstitious, she can already start buying baby clothes. Even if the baby’s gender is not yet known, neutral-colored clothing is a good choice.

A hearty breakfast, a light dinner

By this time, a woman usually gains about 2–2.5 kg. However, sharp weight gain is not yet observed. Try to eat 4–5 times a day in small portions. Never skip breakfast — it should be nutritious and healthy. A light dinner will also be beneficial. Limit salt intake as much as possible.

The nuances of amniocentesis

At this stage, the doctor may prescribe a blood test to evaluate the levels of alpha-fetoprotein, unconjugated estriol, and hCG. Studying these markers helps identify the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. However, even if the results are unfavorable, it is too early to make a final diagnosis. In such cases, an amniocentesis procedure may be recommended.

Amniocentesis involves taking a sample of amniotic fluid. Analysis of this fluid can detect at least 40 possible fetal developmental abnormalities. This procedure is not completely safe, so the mother has the full right to refuse it.

Sensations at 16 weeks of pregnancy

At 16 weeks, the woman’s belly becomes visibly rounded. During a second pregnancy, the belly is usually more noticeable because the muscles and ligaments have already been stretched.

The line running from the navel to the pubic area may darken significantly. Pigmentation may also appear on the forehead, face, bridge of the nose, and around the eyes. Melanin accumulates in the skin, but this is not dangerous — these changes disappear after childbirth.

The breasts are enlarged, so make sure your clothing is not too tight and remains comfortable. Pay attention to the condition of your teeth and gums — if any problems arise, now is the ideal time to visit a dentist.
