The baby starts to hear sounds. Its movements become more active.

Changes in the mother's body

Blood pressure may drop slightly, beware of dizziness.

General information

As the fifth month continues, you will find that you have reached the 18th week of pregnancy. Many women clearly feel the baby’s movements at this stage, which brings special joy to the mother. By the 18th week, the belly becomes larger and can no longer go unnoticed — and really, is there any need to hide this highest expression of feminine beauty?

At this stage, many pregnant women complain of a feeling of pressure from the inside around the navel area. This is caused by the rapidly growing uterus. At 18 weeks of pregnancy, the uterus is approximately the size of a small melon.

What happens at 18 weeks of pregnancy

The baby’s first movements typically occur between the 18th and 22nd weeks of pregnancy. Slim women may notice these movements earlier, while women who are not pregnant for the first time may feel the baby’s movements as early as the 16th week.

As soon as you feel the baby’s kicks, try to observe how often they occur. Four to eight movements per hour are considered normal. Any pain sensations in the lower abdomen should be reported to your doctor. Normally, there should be no serious pain at this stage.

Fetal condition at 18 weeks

If fetal development is progressing normally at 18 weeks, the baby’s arms and legs are usually fully formed, and the fingers already have bones. In addition, unique fingerprint patterns appear on the tiny pads of the baby’s fingers.

The baby’s brain continues to develop. The eyes are still closed, but by the 18th week the fetus has developed sensitivity to light. The baby can clearly distinguish sounds, and is fully ready to listen to the mother’s gentle, pleasant lullabies. The father may begin reading fairy tales to the baby — calm, soft voices are very important to the baby at this stage. Pleasant sensations are already familiar to the little one.

At 18 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus measures about 14 cm in length and weighs nearly 200 grams. There is still plenty of space in the uterus, so the baby feels free — happily tumbling, turning from side to side, and moving arms and legs.

Sensations at 18 weeks of pregnancy

Even though it has not been long since the first movements began, the mother can no longer imagine life without these pleasant little nudges. This also reflects in her mood. By the 18th week, a woman becomes accustomed to her condition, unnecessary fears fade away, and the maternal instinct becomes fully activated.

Surround yourself with beautiful and pleasant things, watch favorite romantic movies. Avoid harsh and aggressive music — gentle, soft melodies are what you need now. Visiting exhibitions and museums is especially beneficial for an expectant mother at this stage. You may also try photography. By creating an atmosphere of beauty around you, you will feel even more deeply how wonderful your current state truly is.

Let liquid foods accompany you

Continue eating properly. Have a nourishing breakfast; you may even allow yourself a small pastry or a couple of bites of chocolate. Be sure to include liquid meals, simple vegetable salads, and lean meats in your diet. Make dinner lighter — fruit cottage cheese or steamed sweet fish are good options.

Do not forget that cereals, vegetables, and nuts are very beneficial. If you crave pasta or potatoes, make sure their portion does not exceed that of vegetable side dishes.

Stay away from mayonnaise and ketchup. Drink more plain water, fruit drinks, and freshly squeezed juices.

Ultrasound at 18 weeks of pregnancy

Between 18 and 22 weeks, a woman must undergo a routine ultrasound examination. This assessment determines how the baby is developing and evaluates the condition of the placenta and umbilical cord. If possible, make sure the father attends this ultrasound as well: first, this is often when the baby’s gender can be identified. Second, seeing the grown baby on the ultrasound monitor often changes the father’s perception of pregnancy as a remarkable and meaningful period.

He will see his future child with his own eyes and will begin eagerly awaiting the baby’s arrival just like the mother.

Before the ultrasound, there should be no fear or anxiety — the baby feels everything. Allow the baby to remain calm and comfortable in the womb.

Wear bright clothes!

By this stage, the mother’s weight may increase by 4.5–6 kg. The belly is still relatively small but noticeably changes the body. Enhance this image with beautiful, comfortable clothing.

You are extraordinarily beautiful now — let the whole world admire you!
