Half of the pregnancy is behind! The baby is practicing swallowing.
The navel may protrude.
Congratulations on the 20th week of pregnancy!
You have already passed the halfway point! The second half of the journey will be emotionally easier, because by now you have grown attached to your baby, whose movements have become much more noticeable.
It is time for the second mandatory ultrasound examination, and you will also need to undergo several tests. By the 20th week of pregnancy, the belly continues to grow, and friends and acquaintances may start asking whether you are expecting a baby. The most comfortable and easiest trimester — the second trimester — is still ongoing.
What happens at 20 weeks of pregnancy
The uterus rises higher and continues to increase in size. By week 20, the belly becomes clearly rounded, and the navel may start to protrude. In some women, a yellowish, semi-transparent fluid — colostrum — may begin to leak from the nipples. It should not be squeezed out; simply wipe the breasts gently with a soft tissue. This colostrum is a precursor to breast milk and may be released in small amounts up until delivery.
If the baby is moving very actively, it may indicate a lack of oxygen. Try to spend more time outdoors, and you may also consider gentle fitness activities designed specifically for pregnant women.
The skin on the abdomen stretches as the uterus grows, which may cause mild itching. Special creams and lotions can help relieve this discomfort.
Fetal condition at 20 weeks
It may seem like just yesterday that the pregnancy test showed a positive result, but by the 20th week the fetus weighs about 260 grams and measures up to 16 cm in length. In theory, within two more weeks the fetus will become viable. In practice, however, although all organs and systems have already formed, they still need time to mature and prepare for functioning outside the mother’s womb.
The baby can hear sounds, distinguish light, suck a finger, and turn the head. The baby sleeps most of the time but also has moments of activity. The skin becomes thicker, and fat begins to accumulate beneath it. However, the baby’s face may still resemble that of an elderly person due to the lack of fat tissue.
At 20 weeks, the baby opens their eyes for the first time — eyelids and eyelashes are already present. The baby is quite active, and you will clearly feel the movements.
Fetal position at 20 weeks
Many babies already adopt a head-down position by the 20th week. If this is not the case for you, there is no need to worry — the baby may still change position several more times.
Excellent mood and strong appetite
Week 20 is characterized by a good appetite, a general sense of well-being, and only occasional minor aches. Even heartburn usually bothers only those women who had gastrointestinal issues before pregnancy.
Reaching the halfway point lifts the expectant mother’s spirits. You may start counting the weeks until your long-awaited maternity leave. If you feel well, do not avoid cafés, museums, or public events. A positive mood is as essential for you as air and water.
Replace sweets with fruit
After passing the halfway mark of pregnancy, weight gain may begin more rapidly — especially for women who do not follow proper dietary guidelines. Review your diet carefully: replace sweets covered in sugar glaze with fruits and vegetables, and choose berry drinks or compotes instead of packaged juices.
Be sure to eat porridge — buckwheat and oatmeal are especially recommended at this stage due to their high iron content. Cottage cheese with fruit or dried fruit is ideal for an early dinner, and after a couple of hours (but not right before bedtime), you may have boiled fish or beef.
Ultrasound at 20 weeks of pregnancy
At this stage, a screening ultrasound is scheduled. The expectant mother will also need to submit blood and urine tests. There is no need to be afraid of the second ultrasound: you will be able to see how your baby’s heart beats and how actively they move. You may also find out your baby’s sex.
Often, a routine gynecological examination on the chair is also scheduled around the 20th week. This examination is painless — the doctor checks the condition of the cervix.
Sensations at 20 weeks of pregnancy
Take care of your breasts: future aesthetic issues with the breasts are often not related to breastfeeding itself, but rather to improper bra use and lack of care during pregnancy. Visit a store and choose a bra that fits you properly. Also purchase a cream to prevent stretch marks caused by skin stretching.
If swelling appears at 20 weeks, contact your doctor immediately — swelling should not occur at this stage. Report any unusual sensations or pain to your healthcare provider.
Wear clothing that fits your changing body comfortably and avoid overly tight garments. Shoes should also be comfortable, with a wide heel and a height of about 3–5 cm.
