Reflexes are developing: the baby can move fingers and open/close mouth.
The uterus rises above the pelvic bone.
Doctors do not call the 12th week of pregnancy the baby’s first anniversary without reason. You can congratulate yourself — one third of the journey has already been completed, and the anxious first trimester is now behind you. The risk of miscarriage has significantly decreased, which means you can now safely share this joyful news with relatives, friends, and your employer.
By this time, a woman is already registered for prenatal care and now visits her doctor once every 3–4 weeks. Usually, the expectant mother begins to feel better, while the baby continues to grow and develop actively.
What happens at 12 weeks of pregnancy
Each week of pregnancy is accompanied by certain sensations, symptoms, and changes. So, what happens during the twelfth week?
Morning nausea gradually disappears, and some women completely forget about toxicosis by week 12. At last, eating becomes enjoyable again. Frequent urges to urinate may also stop bothering you. Intestinal peristalsis slows down, which increases the likelihood of constipation.
Due to increased blood circulation, a woman may notice that her heart is beating faster. The uterus expands to about 10 cm in width, no longer fits in the small pelvis, and begins to rise into the abdominal cavity.
The load on the heart, lungs, and kidneys increases, so it is important to avoid severe fatigue, overeating, and other disruptions to daily routine.
Condition of the fetus at 12 weeks of pregnancy
The baby increasingly resembles a tiny human, although the head remains relatively large compared to the body. Even though the arms and legs are still very small, they are already fully formed. At 12 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus measures about 7–10 cm in length and weighs approximately 15–20 grams.
The baby’s internal organs have already formed, which means that infections and medications no longer pose as great a threat as before. The baby now has eyelids covering the eyes, and the outer ears have formed. Tiny fingernails have appeared on the small hands.
The baby has learned to purse his lips, clench his fists, frown, and open and close his mouth. He can urinate and swallow the surrounding fluid. The brain has divided into two hemispheres.
Mood is extremely changeable
Emotional stability has not yet fully settled. Sudden bouts of anxiety or sharp mood swings are considered normal at this stage. Hormones continue to control emotional responses, so mood changes may occur several times throughout the day.
With a doctor’s permission, pregnant women can engage in prenatal gymnastics, which is beneficial for both physical health and emotional well-being. Simple self-relaxation practices can also be helpful: every morning, stand in front of a mirror, gently stroke your belly, and tell your baby — and yourself — how much love you feel.
Nutrition rules: say no to fast food and soda
At this stage, your diet should be varied, with special attention given to fruits and vegetables. Right now, the body needs plant fiber more than ever.
Drink up to 2 liters of water per day, avoid sugary carbonated drinks and packaged juices. Stay away from fast-food establishments.
Do not skip meals, and avoid heavy dinners — otherwise, abdominal discomfort and frequent trips to the bathroom may interfere with your sleep.
Ultrasound at 12 weeks of pregnancy
It is time for screening. For biochemical testing, blood must be drawn from a vein. All examinations carried out at this stage and later are completely safe for both the baby and the mother.
It is time for the first scheduled ultrasound. During the procedure, the doctor assesses the condition and tone of the uterus, determines the position of the placenta, and can estimate the expected due date. The size of the fetus and the dynamics of its development are also evaluated.
At the same time, the doctor receives extremely important information — an assessment of the risks of possible developmental abnormalities or chromosomal anomalies. This ultrasound should not be skipped, as the information it provides is highly valuable.
Sensations at 12 weeks of pregnancy
People around you may not yet notice that your abdomen has become rounder, but the expectant mother herself can observe these changes in the mirror. At this stage, women often stop wearing trousers with zippers and buttons and begin to prefer elastic, looser clothing. Even if the clothes are not tight, a feeling of slight tension in the abdominal area often appears.
The breasts continue to become fuller and larger, which may cause itching of the skin. It may be time to change your bra. It is important to choose maternity underwear made of high-quality natural materials with a high cotton content that does not cause discomfort when worn.
Pigment spots may appear on the skin of the face and body; they will disappear after childbirth. There is also no need to be afraid of the dark line on the abdomen — it will fade after delivery.
This is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe and enjoy your special condition. Some new sensations may feel unusual, but they often lift your mood and make this period even more joyful.
