Child development

Skeleton bones begin to harden. Fat accumulation begins.

Changes in the mother's body

Maintaining balance may become a bit difficult.

General information

Starting from the 17th week of pregnancy, the fifth month begins. This is a comfortable period that is usually not accompanied by severe discomfort. However, you may still notice certain changes: bleeding gums, increased sweating, or a greater amount of vaginal discharge.

Make sure to get plenty of rest, go to bed on time, and avoid overloading yourself with household chores — this way, the fifth month of pregnancy will begin pleasantly and smoothly.

What happens at 17 weeks of pregnancy

At this stage, the uterus grows upward rather than outward. Because of this, the process may be accompanied by mild painful sensations. Unfortunately, unpleasant symptoms such as heartburn, shortness of breath, and frequent urination may also occur. However, this does not mean that all these symptoms will necessarily appear in every woman.

At 17 weeks of pregnancy, thrush (candidiasis) may worsen — your doctor will prescribe appropriate treatment. In any case, you will need to limit your intake of sweets.

A woman may notice that her heartbeat has become faster. This happens because nutrients are being actively transported through the placental vessels. Increased heart activity may cause bleeding gums, so visiting a dentist is advisable — the doctor can recommend a safe mouth rinse. Sweating may also increase, but this should not be a cause for concern. Take showers more often and use deodorants without strong scents.

Fetal condition at 17 weeks

This week, the baby’s immune system begins to function. The baby’s body starts producing its own immunoglobulins and interferon. Even if the mother becomes ill, the baby now has its own protective mechanisms.

At 17 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus weighs about 200 grams and measures between 10 and 14 cm in length. The baby is quite active and may sometimes react to loud noises.

At this stage, fat begins to accumulate under the baby’s skin, which will later help regulate body temperature. The baby’s heart is almost fully formed and is functioning well. In female fetuses, the uterus begins to develop at this time.

Permanent teeth buds are formed at 17 weeks of pregnancy. The adrenal glands actively produce hormones, and the pituitary gland (the endocrine gland responsible for growth) begins functioning actively. The baby can hear all sounds and senses the mother’s emotions.

All these changes in the baby’s body structure indicate proper fetal development.

If the pregnancy is progressing normally and there are no other indications, doctors usually do not prescribe an ultrasound at 17 weeks.

Mild fatigue and first communication

Even if something is bothering you — for example, discomfort while sleeping or persistent heartburn — try not to lose hope. Remember that the baby reacts to the mother’s emotions and mood. The baby’s movements often signal this. Talk to your baby — even though the pregnancy term is still relatively early, the baby already wants to communicate with you.

Get more rest and ask your loved ones to help with household tasks. Not being able to manage all daily chores is not a fault.

A traditional diet for pregnancy

Heartburn, constipation, and bloating may occur during this period. Proper nutrition is the key to managing these symptoms. Eat small portions but more frequently. Each meal should be nutritious and beneficial. It is better to avoid heavy foods — your digestive system does not need them right now.

Your daily diet should definitely include whole-grain bread, cereals, vegetables and fruits, as well as dairy products.

Vaginal discharge

If an expectant mother notices unusual vaginal discharge, she should consult a doctor immediately. The doctor will take a smear for analysis to determine its nature. Purulent, yellow or green discharge, as well as discharge with an unpleasant odor, should raise concern — these are signs of genital tract infection.

Thrush may worsen and requires treatment. Light, milky-white discharge with a uniform consistency and a slightly sour smell is considered normal.

Sensations at 17 weeks of pregnancy

Changes may become noticeable — both literally and figuratively — on your face. The nose may swell slightly, the lips may appear fuller and more protruded, and the cheeks may become flushed.

At 17 weeks, the belly grows noticeably, and it becomes difficult to hide the pregnancy from others. Sometimes the baby’s movements can be felt even without touching the abdomen. Wear comfortable clothing — otherwise, feelings of shortness of breath and tightness may become bothersome.
