Lungs are developing, practicing breathing movements.
Braxton Hicks (false contractions) may be felt.
Pregnancy. Many women notice that their hair has become thicker and their skin more radiant. For this, hormones deserve the credit — as you can see, they do not reveal themselves only through toxicosis.
Pay close attention to what you eat. Foods that can cause constipation and heartburn should now be avoided. You may feel heaviness in your legs. Try not to overexert yourself and wear comfortable shoes.
What happens at the 23rd week of pregnancy
Most women generally feel well at this stage. However, some discomforts may still appear. In some cases, pain may occur around the tailbone and pelvic bones. If the pain is mild, there is no cause for concern. But if it becomes troublesome, you should definitely consult a doctor.
Heaviness in the legs is associated with stretching of the ligaments. Choose shoes with orthopedic insoles, give your legs regular rest, avoid long walks, and do not remain standing for extended periods.
For some women, the 23rd week of pregnancy marks the beginning of varicose veins. This is due to weakened blood vessel walls. It is important to detect varicose veins in time and minimize possible complications.
Condition of the fetus at 23 weeks
At this stage, many mothers not only feel the baby’s movements but can clearly distinguish specific parts of the body, such as a palm or a heel. Sometimes movements become so strong that they cause discomfort for the expectant mother. The baby’s weight now reaches about 450 grams, and its height is around 20 cm.
Fetal development continues steadily: the baby grows, gains weight, and sensory organs develop. Research shows that a 23-week-old fetus may even dream. Externally, the baby has grown as well — movements have become more coordinated, and curiosity about the surrounding world appears: the baby pulls on the umbilical cord and explores its own body.
The baby is still very thin and resembles an elderly person in appearance. The eyes are open, and the baby can distinguish light from darkness. Loud noises and sudden sounds may frighten the baby, while the mother’s gentle voice and lullabies are comforting.
A “new” body: getting used to it and enjoying it
You notice changes in your body. Some women are delighted by these changes, while others find it difficult to adapt to their new appearance. For some, the growing belly at 23 weeks becomes especially noticeable. Women who accept these changes often radiate confidence and femininity. Others may feel shy about their altered appearance or gait. Today, many expectant mothers turn to psychologists to help overcome feelings of awkwardness.
Behave like a mother who is already ready to protect her child. Avoid nervousness, unnecessary worries, and unfounded fears.
Choose healthy foods
Constipation, heartburn, and hemorrhoids may occur during this period. Avoid foods that can provoke these unpleasant conditions. Fried, spicy, smoked foods and sweets should be excluded as much as possible. Remember that excessive weight gain is harmful: by the 23rd week, a total gain of up to 6.5 kg is considered normal. Excess weight may cause health problems and complicate pregnancy.
Whole grains, bran bread, beef, and boiled fish should remain in your diet. Avoid very sweet drinks and fast food.
Ultrasound at 23 weeks
A complete blood count and general urine analysis are commonly performed at this stage. If you have not yet undergone the second ultrasound screening, it will definitely be done during this period.
During the ultrasound, the condition of the placenta and amniotic fluid is assessed, and the presence or absence of fetal abnormalities is evaluated.
Sensations at 23 weeks of pregnancy
At this stage, a pregnant woman’s skin becomes very sensitive to ultraviolet rays, so sun exposure may lead to increased pigmentation. You may notice darkening of the nipples and a darker line on the lower abdomen — these are normal changes.
Hair and nails may grow faster. Hormones truly gift you beautiful hair and well-groomed nails. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and enhance this wonderful stage of life with beautiful things around you.
