Nails reach the fingertips.
Shortness of breath may be observed as the uterus presses on the lungs.
Walking becomes increasingly difficult for the mother — this is one of the signs of the 32nd week of pregnancy. The baby inside the womb becomes more noticeable and increasingly active. Only a short time remains until the day of childbirth.
The expectant mother visits the antenatal clinic once every two weeks. If she notices rapid weight gain, at this stage she may reduce the intake of carbohydrates and dairy products.
Pregnancy week 32 – baby’s weight
You are now 32 weeks pregnant, and the baby’s weight continues to increase steadily. Over the past month, the baby has gained approximately 900 grams and now weighs close to two kilograms (1,800–1,900 grams). The baby’s length from head to heel is about 42 cm. At 32 weeks, the baby’s height and weight begin to take on individual characteristics and are largely influenced by genetics (such as the parents’ height and build).
At the 32-week stage of pregnancy, the formation of the immune system is underway. The baby receives immunoglobulins, and the body begins producing antibodies that will protect the newborn during the first months after birth.
The baby’s bones continue to grow and become heavier. Fat tissue starts to accumulate evenly throughout the body and becomes especially noticeable on the face. Wrinkles smooth out, facial features soften, and expressions typical of newborns begin to form.
Sensitivity
The baby hears surrounding sounds very well. Many of these sounds have already become familiar: the noise of blood flowing through the mother’s vessels, her heartbeat, breathing, and voice are now everyday sounds for the baby. The baby can distinguish the father’s voice and common household noises. That is why at 32–33 weeks of pregnancy, special attention to the baby is important: talk to the baby, sing children’s songs, and let the baby know that he or she is the most beautiful, healthy, and beloved little person in the world. After birth, the baby will immediately recognize the voices of the mother and father that were heard in the womb.
The nervous system continues to develop, and now when light reaches the baby’s eyes, the pupils begin to constrict.
At this stage, the baby becomes quite active — sometimes so active that you may feel how the baby turns and twists. However, the growing baby has less and less space, and soon the baby will assume a head-down position, which is the most correct and safest position for a smooth and uncomplicated birth.
Pregnancy week 32 – movements
The baby continues to kick, push, and tap actively with arms and legs inside the womb. At 32 weeks of pregnancy, movements can vary: sometimes mothers may be frightened by the baby suddenly becoming “quiet,” while at other times by abrupt jolts. It is important to understand that the baby has grown significantly, clearly hears external noises, distinguishes day from night, and may feel discomfort when the mother is in an uncomfortable position.
How the mother feels
Week 32 of pregnancy has arrived — as the baby’s weight steadily increases, this naturally causes certain discomforts for the woman. The navel stretches further, and the dark line on the abdomen may become more pronounced. This is not a reason to worry — everything will return to normal after childbirth. The uterus is located 12 cm above the navel and 32 cm above the pubic symphysis. The growing belly causes many inconveniences, especially when the baby suddenly presses against the ribs or kicks sharply — this can even be painful. Continue to monitor your posture and try to sit upright whenever possible.
At this stage of pregnancy, fluid retention in the body is common, which can lead to bulging veins and swelling of the ankles and hands. It is best to avoid tight clothing and remove rings if they feel tight or uncomfortable.
At 32 weeks of pregnancy, uterine contractions may occur more frequently.
Pregnancy week 32 – excess amniotic fluid
Every expectant mother waiting for the birth of her baby must clearly understand the responsibility she carries. Therefore, it is important to visit the doctor on time and have detailed information about the course of the pregnancy. It is also useful to read about possible complications in advance, as awareness can help prevent problems. For example, in some cases, excessive amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios) may develop at 32 weeks of pregnancy. This condition is considered a pathology and occurs quite rarely — in only about 2% of cases. It is often associated with certain chronic illnesses in the mother.
There is no need to panic. If you see a gynecologist in a timely manner, complications can usually be avoided. The doctor will take the necessary measures, and the problem can be resolved.
A wealth of knowledge
Reaching the 32nd week of pregnancy means that many months of carrying the baby are already behind you. Now it is time to think about childbirth itself: where and under what conditions it will take place. Whenever they have free time, expectant mothers often begin learning more about maternity hospitals — how childbirth is managed there, what items to bring, and who will accompany them.
If the pregnancy has been progressing normally, admission to the maternity hospital usually occurs shortly before labor begins or via emergency services. However, other scenarios are also possible. Your doctor may recommend hospitalization two weeks before delivery.
You should prepare essential documents, including medical records, personal items, and hygiene products. Dishes, bedding, and clothing depend on the conditions of the maternity hospital you choose, so it is best to clarify these details in advance.
Scheduled ultrasound
At 32–33 weeks of pregnancy, the third scheduled ultrasound is usually performed. With its help, the doctor evaluates the baby’s internal organs, position, and checks for possible umbilical cord entanglement.
At this stage, it is possible to accurately assess the baby’s size, confirm that it corresponds to the gestational age, evaluate the maturity of the placenta, the condition of the amniotic fluid (since 32 weeks is the time when low amniotic fluid, if present, should be detected), and assess the condition of the cervix.
In other words, the doctor receives all the comprehensive information necessary to prepare for childbirth.
Let’s sing and talk
If you are a working woman and still reluctant to stop working, week 32 is the time to make that decision. You need to conserve your strength before childbirth.
These precious weeks of pregnancy should be devoted to yourself and your baby: talk to the baby and sing more songs. In a calm, relaxed environment without stress or intense workloads, you will be able to prepare for childbirth more quickly and effectively, both physically and emotionally.
